About Samuel S. Tapper, FACS, MD, RPVI
S. Scott Tapper, M.D. is an accomplished Vascular Surgeon who grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. His interest in biology was fostered at the Gilman School and it continued at Brown University. He graduated from Brown with Honors in Biology having published 2 papers on oxygen transport research. He then went to the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine where his love of surgery blossomed. He was mentored at Pitt by legendary surgeons Henry Bahnson MD and Mark Ravitch MD. He matched at Vanderbilt University Medical Center for his General Surgery residency, which is one of the pre-eminent surgical training grounds in America. While at Vandy, Dr. Tapper was one of two residents from North America selected to spend a year training at Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide, Australia. It was on the Vascular Surgery service there that his extensive experience in venous disease began. After a year abroad, he returned to Vanderbilt to finish his remaining General Surgery training and it was at this time, that he began a close association with renowned vascular surgeon, William H. Edwards MD with whom he published papers on aortic occlusion and subclavian artery disease. While he was a resident he worked with Johnson and Johnson Inc. to train physicians to implant the first stents used in peripheral arteries. He served as General Surgery Chief Resident in 1992 and then completed the prestigious Vascular Surgery Fellowship at Vanderbilt in 1993. He and his family moved to Stuart, Florida shortly thereafter, in July 1993. He was the first Board Certified Vascular Surgeon on the Treasure Coast and continues to lead the region with innovative state of the art vascular care.
