Dr Sweeney specializes in the treatment of complex cranial disease including tumors of the brain and skull base, cerebrovascular disease and cranial nerve compression syndromes.

He finished his medical and neurosurgical training in Saint Louis and went on to complete specialized training in complex cranial neurosurgery in Tampa, Florida under the direction of Harry Van Loveren. After the fellowship, he stayed on as faculty at the University of South Florida and helped develop the neurosurgical service at a busy outlying trauma center.

He and his family returned to Saint Louis to join our practice in 2013. In addition to a busy clinical practice, Dr Sweeney also serves as adjunct faculty at Saint Louis University and participates in the training of neurosurgical residents.

Dr Sweeney performs many procedures which are less invasive than traditional techniques. These including endoscopic pituitary and skull base surgery endoscopic intraventricular surgery and minimally invasive spinal decompression and fusions.

Clinical Interests:

Tumors and other disorders of the brain, skull base and spinal cord including gliomas, meningiomas, pituitary tumors, vestibular schwannomas (acoustic neuromas), colloid cysts, aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, cavernous hemangiomas, trigeminal neuralgia, Chiari malformation and adult hydrocephalus. His interests also include degenerative disease of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine including disc herniations, spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis.
