About Mark E. Holthouse, MD
After practicing Family Medicine from 1993 to 2004, I came to a point in my career where I wanted to look at medicine from a ROOT CAUSE perspective instead of simply naming and blaming lists of symptoms patients came in with. I got sick of feeling like handing out prescription drugs and recommending surgery was all that I could do for people! In 2005 I started taking nutrition and integrative medicine courses as fast as time would allow and felt that I had found "my tribe". Shortly thereafter I started the Center for Functional & Integrative Medicine and later opened the True Health Center for Functional Medicine in El Dorado Hills, CA. During these transforming years, I have obtained board certification by the American Board of Integrative & Holistic Medicine, the American Board of Integrative Medicine and become a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner. I have also maintained my board in Family Medicine to keep both skill sets up to date. I am really enjoying the broader perspective when my patients come in with symptoms, seeing results I could never get using solely what I learned in medical school.
My favorite thing about being a physician is the opportunity to teach. I get to teach while practicing functional medicine in the clinic and in academics as a professor at Loma Linda University School of Medicine teaching Preventive Cardiology to the senior medical students...great fun! I have also been honored by the Institute for Functional Medicine as part of their teaching faculty sharing what I have learned with other practitioners in the Advanced Hormone Practice Module since 2014.
