He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois where he majored in biology as well as Biblical and theological studies. He earned his medical degree from Loyola University Chicago’s Stritch School of Medicine.

After completing a one-year internship with the Grand Rapids Medical Education and Research Center, he was activated into military service where he spent 12 years on active duty with the U.S. Air Force. He served for six years as a flight surgeon before completing his residency training while on active duty in San Antonio at Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center and Brooke Army Medical Center. His duty stations included bases in Florida, Germany, Texas, and Washington, DC.
